Packing stresses me out, and I don't do it until the last minute. Lists decrease my stress- and help me remember to bring my toothbrush. Here is a practical list of what you need for a week-long summer road trip in Iceland.
This list is for a summer road trip, but don't be fooled. Although the land is green and the sun is always out, it's still cold. The key to keeping warm is the art of layering - and removing layers before you get hot and sweaty.
Let me preface this list: I HATE being cold. This list was my attempt to stay warm.
Initially, the thought of camping was terrifying. Why would I want to go sleep outdoors on the ground - where there are bugs!?
After many camping trips and a few wilderness meltdowns, I've learned the value of packing certain creature comforts. I mean- I know you're outdoors, but that doesn't mean you have to freeze your butt off.
Airplane travel is so terrible it sometimes makes you forget you're actually going on vacation. Here are some ways you can make it better.
So... I've already written about the Hobbiton, but I skimped on the photos. This was partly because processing photos after a trip is exhausting and I'm a nerd who thought it more efficient and useful to write a detailed itinerary. Regardless, here are some photos of the Hobbiton.
When planning travel, I hate the process: cross referencing multiple airline sites, clearing my cookies, and switching to Google Incognito mode. I'm also kind of a last minute, spontaneous planner, so airline websites are not by best friend. If you're not a mileage/points person who is particular on what airlines you fly, these apps make things easier and much cheaper.
Road tripping is cool in the sense that you get to see a LOT of the country. Being stuck in a car all day is not so cool. Whenever you road trip in another country - try to do one capstone adventure.
This is Day 6 (Part 1) of NZ in a Little Over a Week. If you haven't already, check out Day 5 - Picton to Greymouth.
When in Iceland... you ride Icelandic horses.
So... is it worth it?
I went on the Saga Travels Skjaldarvík tour in Akuryeri. The company provides van ride from Akuryeri to the ranch and let you borrow a riding helmet. The owners of the ranch have 2 dogs that love being cuddled. They come along for the tour, making it (literally) a dog and pony show.
40 years ago, a U.S. Navy plane crashed on the south coast of Iceland. Fortunately, everyone survived. This wreckage has been left in Solheimasandur's black sand beach. It a popular photography location, but is off the beaten path and can only be accessed by 4 x 4. Also, it is a pain in the butt to get to.
